Montegut man dies from injuries sustained in crash after avoiding a golf cart
Bourg, La. -- A Montegut man died Saturday afternoon from injuries he sustained in a crash on the morning of May 5 when his vehicle struck a tree limb after avoiding a golf cart in the road, a Louisiana State Police news release said.
The investigation revealed that an E-Z- Go golf cart was traveling north in the northbound lane of La. 24 in front of the address of 4241 La. 24 in Bourg, La., the report stated. The golf cart was being operated by Katelyn Duplantis, 18, of Chauvin, La., the report stated.
A 2003 Oldsmobile Bravada was traveling north on La 24 approaching the address of 4241 La. 24. The Bravado was being driven by Cleveland Towns, 63, of Montegut, La, police stated.
As the Bravada approached the golf cart it swerved to the left to avoid striking the golf cart, the report stated. The Bravado traveled off the road to the left and struck an oak tree limb, which impacted the windshield and roof of the Bravada.
Duplantis was not injured in the crash.
Towns, who was not wearing a seat belt, was taken to Terrebonne General Hospital for treatment and was later brought to University Hospital in New Orleans where he died yesterday afternoon due to the injuries he sustained in the crash, the report stated.

Duplantis submitted to a breath test and was found to be over the legal limit of 0.02g% for someone under the age of 21, as well as above the legal limit of 0.08g% for someone 21 and older, the report stated.
Blood was taken from Towns and the test results will be pending at the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab, the report stated.
This crash remains under investigation.
