Meador leads South Central Louisiana Technical College

MORGAN CITY, La. — Earl Meador says he is a “blue collar guy with a big certificate on the wall.”

Meador was appointed in November to replace Jimmy Sawtelle as director of South Central Louisiana Technical College.

“I came through the system backward,” Meador said, noting that he obtained a juris doctorate degree and then came into the technical college system.

Meador, originally from Texas, came to Morgan City in 1995 as a consultant for a boat being built in Morgan City. He basically never left, teaching at Young Memorial in 2001 while obtaining his law degree and eventually serving as the dean of South Central Louisiana Technical College’s Lafourche campus. He also oversaw the system’s Galliano Service Center. Meador’s professional career has included a variety of positions with South Central Louisiana Technical College, including serving as an instructor in the marine department and as assistant dean of the Young Memorial campus.

He was even a student at the Morgan City campus in 1998-99 when he upgraded his captain’s license.

As for his work in industry, Meador gained experience in a variety of senior management positions, including president of an offshore service company and operations/personnel manager of Aggressor Fleet, which operates luxury scuba diving yachts in 16 countries.

“I am pleased with the selection of Mr. Meador as the new director of SCLTC,” said Dr. Joe May, Louisiana board of supervisors’ president. It is the board that appointed Meador at its November meeting.

“His experience and intimate knowledge of technical education and SCLTC will ensure a seamless transition. I am confident that SCLTC will continue to thrive under his leadership by meeting the needs of its students, community, and business and industry,” May said.

The college has three campuses in South Central Louisiana — River Parish in Reserve, Lafourche in Thibodaux and the Young Memorial in Morgan City — with two extension campuses in Morgan City and Galliano. The college offers certificates, diplomas and associate degrees in many current fields including process technology, commercial diving and marine offshore safety.

“I am looking forward to leading SCLTC and am passionate about the value of technical education. I credit my personal success to the technical education I obtained rather than the academic accomplishment of completing a juris doctor from Loyola University. It is the technical education/skills that supported my family while working through the university system to complete graduate level training. Knowing firsthand the value of the college, I am truly honored to have been chosen for this position,” said Meador.

Meador holds a bachelor’s degree in business management, a juris doctor from Loyola University School of Law and a sixth issue 500 ton USCG Masters License.

Meador and his wife, Lori, live in Thibodaux.
