Man found dead, woman injured at Bayou Vista inn
BAYOU VISTA, La. -- A man was found dead Saturday morning at a hotel in Bayou Vista after he allegedly shot a woman, leaving her injured, and then shot and killed himself, according the St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Traci Landry.
Sheriff’s deputies responded to a 911 call at 8:28 a.m. and found an unresponsive male in one of the rooms at the Plantation Inn in Bayou Vista. The St. Mary Parish coroner pronounced the man dead at the scene.
The deceased male was identified as 36-year-old Vernon Singleton.
During the investigation, investigators learned that Singleton had rented the room. They learned that he produced a handgun and shot the 26-year-old woman in the face while she lay next to him, Landry said.
He then turned the gun on himself and delivered one fatal shot to the head.
The woman was able to leave the room and get to the front desk.
She was taken to a hospital in New Orleans Saturday and was in stable condition as of Monday morning, Landry said. Her injuries and condition at this time is not known.
Singleton’s body was turned over to the coroner’s office and an autopsy was performed, she said.
The investigation is ongoing, Landry said.
