The St. Mary Parish MADD Chapter held its “A Light of Hope” Ceremony on Monday at the Lamp Post in Franklin. The program is held annually to recognize St. Mary Parish’s Top Cops and remember drunk driving victims. The St. Mary Chapter of MADD reviewed arrest records of the seven law enforcement agencies in the parish for the period of Nov. 1, 2012 to Nov. 1, 2013. Records of the Morgan City, Berwick, Patterson, Franklin, Chitimacha and Baldwin Police departments, along with the St. Mary Parish Sherriff’s Office, show a total of 167 arrests for driving while intoxicated. This figure reflects an increase of seven arrests from the previous year. There were 114 arrests for first offense DWI, 39 arrests for second offense DWI and 12 arrests for third offense DWI. Over the past 16 years, a total of 3,890 DWI arrests have been made by parish agencies. State Police Troop I reported a total of 46 DWI arrests in St. Mary Parish.
