St. Mary Parish sales tax revenues up 10%

Parish sales and use taxes have increased 10 percent through the first 11 months of this year over the same period last year with more than $42 million in distributions to the parish, municipalities and the recreation district, according to figures released by the St. Mary Parish Sales and Use Tax Department for November.
There was $4,145,702 reported from the sales and use tax in the November report, bringing the total to $42,327,014 distributed through the first 11 months of the year. The parish collected $41,680 in taxes through five audits in the report. The November figures were 12.7 percent above November, 2012.
The double-digit increase more than triples the conservative estimate of growth Jeffrey LaGrange, tax department director, made for the year.
“We continue to enjoy healthy increases over 2012,” LaGrange said. “My conservative projection for 2013 of a 3 percent increase for the year has been surpassed on all months with the exception of January and March.”
The St. Mary Parish School Board has received a little over $18.1 in the tax distribution with a month left in the year and the parish council has gotten just more than $6.9 million. Morgan City has received more than $5.2 million and the St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office has gotten nearly $2.6 million.
Morgan City also has a 0.3 percent sales and use tax it assesses which is dedicated to street improvements. The November report for the road tax was down 1.6 percent from the previous month.

—City of Franklin, nearly $3 million.
—City of Baldwin, slightly more than $912,000.
—Recreation District No. 1, slightly more than $352,000.
The parish 4 percent hotel tax, was down 7 percent from last November but nonetheless is still 13 percent over the same period last year. The November report showed a tax of $60,344, a 2.2 percent over the previous month, bringing the 11 month total to $677,422. The parish has collected $10,553,497 year to date for the tax.
