Schools to close as freezing rain, sleet, snow forecast

St. Mary Parish public schools as well as Central Catholic High and Holy Cross Elementary will be closed Tuesday and Wednesday due to forecasted wintry weather.
All schools and administrative offices of the St. Mary Parish School Board will reopen on Thursday.
St. Mary Parish Superintendent of Schools Donald Aguillard announced the closing Monday morning.
“The National Weather Service has declared the entire region under a Winter Storm Watch through Thursday,” Aguillard stated in a news release.
According to the NWS, Tuesday and Tuesday night shows a chance of winter precipitation — snow, sleet or freezing rain. The highest probabilities are in the 20 to 30 percent range. In general, the highest chances are along and south of the I-10 corridor from southwest Texas through southwest and south central Louisiana, the weather service stated.
Principals at the two Catholic schools said it is the policy of the Houma-Thibodaux Diocese to follow what the parish’s public schools do regarding closures.
The Young Memorial Campus of South Central Louisiana Technical College will close Wednesday as well, according to Regional Director Earl Meador. At this time, classes will be held through noon Tuesday, he said. He urged students to watch the system’s website for changes.
