Holy Cross celebrating 50th anniversary

Holy Cross Catholic Church will kick off its 50th anniversary celebration Sunday with a Mass at 11 a.m. officiated by Archbishop Gregory Aymond of the Archdiocese of New Orleans.
Holy Cross Parish was established June 1, 1964, and the church will hold its main celebration on June 1 of this year, the Rev. Danny Poché of Holy Cross Catholic Church said.
The first Mass in the church was celebrated Aug. 15, 1965, with the Rev. Gerald Barrett officiating, according to the parish history.
Aymond will officiate Sunday’s Mass because the parish was part of the Archdiocese of New Orleans for 15 years until 1977 when the Diocese of Houma-Thibodaux was established, Poché said. “That’s why we’re kicking off with the Archbishop because the Archdiocese was the one that established the parish,” he said.
Each month in 2014, one of the church’s former pastors will come back and celebrate Mass, he said.
Poché has been pastor of Holy Cross for nine years and is its eighth pastor. The parish has two permanent deacons, the Rev. Andrew Dragna, who has been with the parish since his ordination in 1976, and the Rev. Vic Bonnaffee, who assumed his duties with the parish in 2006, according to the parish history.
Sacred Heart Catholic Church is the “mother parish” of Morgan City, and Holy Cross was established out of Sacred Heart, Poché said.
“The parish was established in 1964 because at that time Morgan City was a booming town. People were moving in because of the oil and seafood industry,” Poché said.
“Morgan City was growing so the church felt the need to add another church parish to help in the services of the Catholic community of Morgan City,” he said.
The public is invited to attend Sunday’s celebration and all of the church’s celebrations throughout the year, Poché said. Sunday’s Mass will be followed by a luncheon for the parish in the Yvonne Anne Adams Life Center.
