Local teams fall at southwest regional
Local softball teams had a rough time in their age groups in the opening round of bracket play at the Babe Ruth Southwest Regional in Houma Thursday as all four local squads lost.
The Morgan City 8U All-Stars fell to Lafayette County from Arkansas, 16-2, while the Patterson 8U All-Stars fell to Terrebonne Parish All-Stars 20-6.
In 10U action, Patterson fell to Terrebonne 13-4, while in 12U action, Patterson was eliminated from the tournament after falling in run-rule contests, once to Hamburg, Ark., in five innings in their opener and in an elimination game later to Saucier, Miss., 22-10, in four innings.
In Morgan City’s loss, Nyla Morse led the squad with a 2-for-2 performance with two doubles and an RBI, while Amaya Williams finished 1-for-2 with a double and an RBI, and Kamryn Olivier, 1-for-2 with a single.
“The girls played their best,” Morgan City coach Joshua Hayles said, adding that Lafayette County was “well prepared.”
Morgan City will play an elimination game today at 1 p.m. against Plaquemine.
In Patterson’s 8U action, coach Mike Ortiz said that because Terrebonne was a parish team, they are tougher to compete against.
“They’ve got incredible athletes,” he said.
He said he was proud of his team’s effort.
“It’s been a rewarding experience for the girls,” he said.
Patterson will play Saucier, Miss., today in an elimination game at 3 p.m.
As for his team’s 10U contest, Patterson coach Chad Nelson said, “We played a very good team, and we played with a lot of heart and we can be proud of the effort that we put forth.”
Patterson plays in elimination game today at 1 p.m. against Saucier, Miss.
As for his team’s 12U performance, coach Warren Smith said he was proud of his team.
He said he had some girls playing out of position because the team was shorthanded.
Smith noted that teams his squad plays have a much larger pool of girls to choose from.
“It’s kind of hard to beat teams that have that many girls” to choose from, he said.
