Lady Tigers soccer team full of talented youth
By GEOFF STOUTE
The Morgan City Lady Tiger soccer team may be young, but that doesn’t mean they are not talented.
The squad, which has just three seniors, had a large freshman class last season that, in addition to gaining experience playing travel soccer before entering high school, now comes back for their sophomore year with a year of varsity experience under their belt as well as some postseason honors from a year ago.
Of the returnees, three made the Louisiana High School Soccer Coaches Association Division II All-Freshman team in Paige Comeaux, Sarah Patterson and Celeste Williams.
Of those, Patterson was a first-team all-district selection, while Williams was a second-team selection and Comeaux, an honorable mention choice.
The Lady Tigers (11-7-2, 2-0 in district) have continued the trend of playing freshmen this year, coach Trevor Patterson said, as he has started multiple first-year high school players.
He singled out freshman Hannah Toups among them.
“She’s a tremendous player all around,” he said. “She plays on the field, and she’s also a backup goalie.”
This year’s seniors are Carmen Araujo, a first-team all-district selection a year ago; Ashley Rock, an honorable mention all-district selection last year; and Jennifer Nguyen.
Among the other returnees from last year’s squad, which advanced to the regional round of the playoffs before falling to Ursuline, include juniors Layne Reynaud and Chandler Pasqua.
Reynaud, a goalkeeper, was a first-team all-district selection a year ago in just her first year playing soccer.
During the offseason, she attended a goalkeeping camp at Texas A&M to refine her skills even more.
Pasqua made second-team all-district a year ago as a sophomore for her play in the Lady Tigers’ defense.
While a wealth of experience returns, the Lady Tigers did have to replace some members of last year’s squad, including seniors Reina Fernandez and Sarina Morales.
Fernandez was a first-team all-district selection a year ago, while Morales was a second-team selection.
The squad also has had to find a replacement for last year’s standout freshman, Shannon Theriot, who attends Berwick High this year.
Theriot was an offensive spark for the Lady Tigers last year, and was named first-team all-district and to the Louisiana High School Soccer Coaches Association Division II All-Freshman team.
However, Williams, Sarah Patterson and Araujo all have made solid contributions this year for the Lady Tigers offense in her place.
In non-district action this year, the Lady Tigers have put up some impressive performances against highly regarded teams. They limited Hahnville to a goal in a 1-0 defeat, while recently at the St. Louis Showcase in Lake Charles, they tied St. Louis.
In district, Morgan City competes with state power Vandebilt Catholic as well as E.D. White, South Terrebonne and Ellender.
Morgan City has begun district with victories against South Terrebonne and E.D. White on the road.
Coach Trevor Patterson said Vandebilt Catholic would be in the mix for a district title, while he said E.D. White would be improved from a year ago.
E.D. White is up for the Lady Tigers in a game in Thibodaux Friday.
It’s one that Trevor Patterson thinks E.D. White could be looking for revenge because Morgan City beat them out for second place in district a year ago.
“We knocked them out (for second place) last year, which was a great win for the girls but it was a shock to them,” Trevor Patterson said.
