Lady Eagles will host Ouachita Christian today

BAYOU VISTA — The Central Catholic Lady Eagles will continue postseason play today when it hosts Ouachita Christian at 4 p.m.
Central Catholic, Class 1A’s fourth seed, advanced to the regional round after knocking off No. 29 seed St. Edmund, 2-1, Tuesday.
Ouachita Christian, the No. 13 seed, eliminated No. 20 seed St. Martin’s Episcopal, 11-3.
Central Catholic coach Joe Russo said Ouachita Christian is a good ball club.
Some of their scores this year against top-ranked competition support Russo’s statement.
While they dropped both games to district foe and Class 1A’s top seed, Cedar Creek, the second game was by a 7-6 margin. In the first game, Ouachita Christian fell 5-2.
In their regular season finale, Ouachita Christian fell to Buckeye, who is Class 3A’s No. 2 seed, 5-3.
During the last two years, Ouachita Christian has been knocked out of the playoffs by eventual state champion Archbishop Hannan.
Last year, Ouachita Christian advanced to the semifinals as a No. 15 seed. Along the way, they had to travel to Franklin where they knocked off Hanson Memorial, 6-2.
Russo said this year’s Ouachita Christian squad hits well and features two pitchers. One, he said, doesn’t throw hard but gets movement on her pitches around the plate.
Another pitcher has been clocked in the mid-50s and also gets movement around the plate, Russo said.
Russo said his squad would have to play well and hit well to advance.
On Monday, the squad had trouble getting much going against St. Edmund’s pitcher as the Lady Eagles hit multiple popups for easy outs, including one with the bases loaded.
However, pinch hitter Gee Garrett came through with a line-drive two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning for the Lady Eagles and Megan Landry tossed a one-hitter to help Central Catholic advance.
Russo said his squad has been working hard on hitting since Monday’s game.
Admission to today’s game will be $6.
