Lady Eagles fall to Vandebilt

MORGAN CITY — In a battle of the top three teams in different classifications, Class 4A Vandebilt Catholic held the upper edge against Class 1A Central Catholic Tuesday with a 41-36 victory.

Vandebilt Catholic entered the game ranked third in the latest Class 4A poll released by the Louisiana Sports Writers Association, while Central Catholic was Class 1A’s second-ranked squad.

The loss snapped a five-game winning streak for Central Catholic (16-7 overall, 4-0 in District 8-1A), who last lost on Jan. 8 at home against St. Thomas More.

While Vandebilt Catholic took a 16-13 lead after a period of play, both teams’ scoring output cooled considerably in the second quarter as each team scored four points, with Vandebilt heading into halftime with a 20-17 advantage.

Vandebilt heated up in the third quarter as it scored 11 points, but Central Catholic remained cold as it again scored just four points and entered the fourth quarter trailing 31-21.

While Central Catholic outscored Vandebilt Catholic 15-10 in the fourth quarter, it wasn’t enough.

Randi Brown led Central Catholic with a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds. She also added four steals, three blocks and one assist.

Other top Central Catholic contributors included Meo Knight, 14 points, nine rebounds, four steals, three blocks and two assists; and Makayla McDaniel, six points, four steals, two assists and a rebound.

Central Catholic will return to action Friday when it resumes District 8-1A action with a home contest against Ascension Episcopal. Girls’ varsity action is set for a 6 p.m. start.

Morgan City falls

to Ellender

Morgan City fell to Ellender, 74-29, in District 8-4A action in Morgan City Tuesday.

No individual statistics were available from the contest.

With the loss, Morgan City falls to 7-16 overall and 1-4 in District 8-4A action.

The Lady Tigers will continue District 8-4A action Thursday when they travel to Bourg to face South Terrebonne.

Varsity girls’ action is set to begin at approximately 6 p.m.

Patterson drops

close contest

Patterson dropped a 38-34 contest to Kaplan High School in District 9-3A action in Patterson Tuesday.

Things started out well for the ’Jills, who outscored Kaplan 15-10 in the first quarter.

However, Kaplan used a 12-6 second-quarter scoring advantage to take a 22-21 lead into halftime.

Kaplan gained a little more ground in the third quarter as it outscored Patterson 6-4, while in the fourth, it edged Patterson in scoring, 10-9.

Patterson’s Tiera Butler finished one rebound short of a double-double Tuesday as she scored 15 points and had nine rebounds.

Other top Patterson scorers included Tala Johnson, eight points and four rebounds; and Jazmin Evans, seven points and a rebound.

Patterson will return to action Friday when it travels to face Abbeville, Class 3A’s sixth-ranked squad. Varsity action is set to start at approximately 6 p.m.

North Vermilion defeats

Berwick Lady Panthers

North Vermilion defeated Berwick, 43-22, in District 9-3A action Tuesday in Berwick.

North Vermilion, Class 3A’s eighth-ranked squad, raced out to a 15-3 lead after a period of play before Berwick outscored them 5-4 in the second period. The Lady Panthers went into halftime trailing 19-8.

North Vermilion held a 15-4 third-quarter scoring advantage for a 34-12 lead after three quarters before Berwick outscored North Vermilion 10-9 in the fourth quarter.

Abigail Ohlin led Berwick with 13 points, Khadijah Johnson had four and Hayley Girard added three for the home squad.

Berwick will return to action Friday when it hosts Covenant Christian in non-district action. Varsity girls’ action is set for a 5 p.m. start.
