The Morgan City High School track and field team will only send two participants to
Saturday’s state track and field meet at LSU’s Bernie Moore Track and Field Stadium.
However, if the state heat sheets are any indication, both could make their mark Saturday.
Sophomore Jaylen Jones and junior Malcolm Watkins enter the state meet with the second and third-best marks in Class 4A following their sweep of the top two spots at regionals.
Jones won the triple jump at the Tigers’ regional 4A meet with a leap of 45 feet, 1 inch,
while Watkins was second at regionals with a 44-foot, 7.5 inch mark.
Jones’ regional mark was nearly two feet better than what he recorded at the District 8-4A meet, where he won the event with a leap of 43 feet, 2.5 inches.
Watkins also greatly improved his regional performance from district. At district,
he jumped 41 feet, 2.5 inches, good enough for third place.
Opelousas’ Daquan Bellard enters state with the top mark at 46 feet, 3 inches.
The Class 4A boys’ triple jump competition is set for a 5 p.m. start and will be held in
the east pit.
