'Jacks win second straight

From Staff Reports

The Patterson Lumberjacks used a five-run fifth inning to overpower Abbeville, 7-3, in District 9-3A play Monday in Patterson.

Patterson grabbed an early lead when the ’Jacks scored runs in the first and second innings for a 2-0 margin.

“We were able to put some pressure on them with a couple early runs, and that’s what we wanted to do,” Patterson coach Ryan Jensen said.

Abbeville scored a run in the fourth and two in the fifth to take a 3-2 lead against PHS starter Spencer Landry.

“Spencer had a good outing; we can always count on him to throw strikes,” Jensen said. “They were able to string a few hits together on him in the fifth, but he’s only a sophomore and he’s growing with every start.”

In five innings of work, Landry surrendered three runs (two earned) on six hits. He walked three and struck out eight.

The Lumberjacks responded with a big inning in the bottom of the fifth to put the game out of reach, 7-3.

“I was happy with the way we responded offensively,” Jensen said. “We made them work for every out in that inning.”

After the big inning, Patterson went to reliever Cameron Clements.

“Cameron had his good stuff tonight,” Jensen said. “You can tell he hadn’t thrown in a while, and his arm is fresh. We knew we would need him down the stretch so we rested him recently. He really overpowered them tonight; they didn’t get many good swings against him.”

In two innings of relief, Clements surrendered a hit and struck out four.

Patterson is 23rd in the latest unofficial power rankings with six games remaining in the regular season.

“Every win is big for us at this point,” Jensen said. “We have won two games in a row, and if we can get on a roll, maybe we can avoid playing a top program in the first round of the playoffs.”

In Monday’s game, Landry led the ‘Jacks at the plate with a 2-for-3 performance with a double, while Dallas Hamlett added a 2-for-4 outing with a run.

Other Lumberjack contributors included Chase Martin, 1-for-2 with a double; Bobby Jennings, 1-for-2, two runs; Jaydrick DeClouet, 1-for-3, two RBI; Ryan Wade, 1-for-3, an RBI; Bryce Tabor, 1-for-4, a run and an RBI; and Cameron Fontenot, an RBI.

The ’Jacks (12-11 overall, 2-6 in District 9-3A play) will return to action today when they host Ellender Memorial in a non-district contest. Junior varsity action will begin at 4 p.m., and varsity will follow at 6 p.m.
