'Jacks rout North Vermilion

PATTERSON — Patterson raced out to an early lead and never was threatened in a 68-33 thrashing of North Vermilion.

While North Vermilion entered the game as Class 3A’s 10th-ranked squad in the latest Louisiana Sports Writers Association poll, Patterson dominated the contest, just like it had in their previous meeting when the ’Jacks beat North Vermilion by 22.

Patterson was receiving votes in the latest prep poll.

However, in the more important power rankings, which are used to determine playoff seeding, Patterson currently sits No. 14. North Vermilion is No. 17 in the rankings, which although released by the Louisiana High School Athletic Association, are unofficial.

In Tuesday’s contest, Patterson jumped out to a 19-8 lead after a period of play and had their best defensive quarters during the second and third periods as they held North Vermilion to three points in each of the quarters, while Patterson put up 14 points in the second quarter to take a 33-11 lead into the half and then 17 more in the third quarter for a 50-14 lead after three quarters.

Taylan Grogan and Daylon Charlot reached double figures for Patterson with 12 and 10 points, respectively, while Kenneth Washington added nine.

Other top scorers included Jedrick Gunner, eight; Deondre Skinner, 7; Denzel Johnson and Larry Turner, six each; and Dontrell Benjamin and Malik Garret, four each.

Patterson (11-5 overall, 7-0 in District 9-3A) will return to action Friday when it makes the short trip to Berwick for district play.

Morgan City

beats Assumption

Morgan City picked up a dominate 55-28 District 8-4A victory against Assumption Tuesday in Morgan City.

The Tigers outscored Assumption in every quarter except the second, including a 22-point outburst in the fourth period.

While Morgan City took a 14-6 lead after a period of play, Assumption outscored Morgan City 10-6 in the second quarter to cut Morgan City’s halftime advantage to 20-16.

Morgan City clamped down on defense in the third quarter as it allowed just three points while putting up 13 on offense for a 33-19 advantage.

In the fourth, Morgan City outscored Assumption 22-9.

Jaylen Jones and Tyrin Watts both reached double figures for Morgan City with 17 and 16 points, respectively.

Other top scorers included Marquis Green, six points; Malcolm Watkins, five; and Brannon Randle and Buddy Humphrey, four each.

Morgan City (12-9 overall, 2-2 in district), ranked 25th in the latest unofficial power ratings, will return to action Thursday when it hosts Centerville in non-district action. Junior varsity boys’ action is set for 6 p.m. with boys’ varsity to follow.

Central Catholic

overwhelms Hanson

Central Catholic pounded Hanson, 93-46, in District 8-1A play in Franklin Tuesday.

Central Catholic jumped out to a 29-12 lead after a period of play, and using a 25-5 second-quarter scoring advantage, pulled away from Hanson for a 54-17 advantage at the half.

The Eagles outscored Hanson 23-16 in the third quarter for a 77-33 advantage after three quarters.

Central Catholic coach Ree Case commended the play of Tyler Hoffpauir and Lamar Grogan for their offensive rebounding and scoring.

Both led the Eagles with 15 points.

Other top scorers included Stephano Guarisco with 12, while Jalen Johnson added 11 and David Brown, 10.

In junior varsity play, Central Catholic defeated Hanson, 42-29.

Guarisco led Central Catholic with 17 points, while Johnson added 10.

Central Catholic, ranked No. 1 in Class 1A in the latest prep poll as well as No. 1 in the latest unofficial power ratings, will hit the road Friday to face Vermilion Catholic. Junior varsity boys’ action is set for a 5:15 p.m. start, with varsity boys’ and girls’ action to follow.

Berwick falls on the road

Berwick hung tough but could not overcome Erath in a 51-45 defeat in District 9-3A play Tuesday.

Both teams were tied at 13 after a quarter and Berwick took a 24-21 lead into half.

However, Erath outscored Berwick 13-7 and 17-14 in the third and fourth quarters, respectively, for the win.

Palmer Cox led Berwick with 12 points, while Nick Canty and Devin Tabor added eight apiece; Brandon Naverro, six; Chaz Russo, five; and Tim Shelby, three.

Berwick (6-14 overall, 0-6 in district play) will return to action Friday when it hosts Patterson in District 9-3A play. Junior varsity boys’ action is set for 5 p.m., with varsity girls’ and boys’ action to follow.
