Inmate dies in Morgan City jail (updated)

MORGAN CITY, La. — A 59-year-old man died Friday while in custody at the Morgan City Police Department jail, according to a news release from Police Chief Travis Crouch.

The victim, who has not been identified pending notification of next of kin, was found at 8:23 p.m. unresponsive in his cell, Crouch reported.

Paramedics attempted life-saving measures on the man before he was pronounced dead by emergency medical personnel, the news release stated.

The man showed no external signs of trauma, Crouch stated.

Louisiana State Police are investigating and an autopsy was scheduled, he stated.

“Once we get the results back from the autopsy, we’ll send out an update. We’ll find out a cause of death and notify his family, and we’ll send out an update,” said Lt. James Blair of Morgan City police.

“It happened over the weekend. … The body was shipped off to have the autopsy done. As soon as we get something, we’ll let everybody know,” Blair said.
