PHS, CCHS qualify for playoffs
The Louisiana High School Athletic Association released its brackets for the inaugural nine-championship prep football playoff system, and two local teams were among those selected.
Patterson enters the Class 3A nonselect bracket as the No. 4 seed, while Central Catholic is the No. 16 seed in the Division 4 (Class 1A) select bracket.
The Lumberjacks (8-2, 4-0 in district), which won the District 9-3A title Friday with a 45-6 win against Franklin, will host No. 29 Rayville (4-6, 2-2 in District 2-3A) this week.
Central Catholic (4-6 overall, 4-2 in district), which closed its regular season with a 50-0 victory against Gueydan Friday, will host No. 17 seed St. Martin’s Episcopal (5-5 overall, 4-2 in District 9-1A), this week.
While teams in Classes 1A-5A competed together during the regular season, in the postseason, the teams were divided into select and nonselect categories.
The select schools include some dual-curriculum, nonpublic, charter, full magnet and university lab schools.
The nonselect group consists of public and some dual curriculum schools as well as institutions in the Recovery School District.
All select schools in the four classifications automatically qualified for the playoffs before the season began with the top teams in Divisions 4 and 3 receiving byes, while the top five teams in Division 1 will have a first-round bye.
In the public school brackets, the top 32 teams will qualify for the postseason in each class except in Class 1A, where there are 27 teams eligible for postseason play.
