Morgan City falls in season finale

Morgan City’s Hector Tolento

Our kids fought hard all season long, and we played a very good game last week.

The Assumption Mustangs and Morgan City Tigers were not playing for a spot in the Class 4A playoffs during Friday’s regular-season finale.
Both teams were playing for pride and building momentum for the 2014 season.
In the end, it was Assumption who accomplished those goals by cruising to a 49-13 win in a District 7-4A game.
“It was a tough year, but I like the way we finished the season,” Assumption coach Anthony Paine said. “I really have to give it to the kids. They came out every week, regardless of the situation, and put forth the effort so that we could have a night like (Friday). We played several underclassmen this year and showed that we have something to look forward to. But again, I have to give it all to the kids. I am very happy for them, the community and most of all, the seniors. They deserve to go out with a win.”
Early on, each team capitalized on their opponents’ mistakes to reach the end zone.
After the Tigers fumbled on their first play, Assumption (3-7 overall, 2-2 in 7-4A) needed only two plays to take an early 8-0 lead. Ty Domangue hooked up with Dontrez Wiggins on an 18-yard touchdown pass, and Wiggins ran in the two-point conversion for the early lead.
Morgan City (0-10, 0-4 in 7-4A) answered with the help of its defense as Buddy Humphrey intercepted a Domangue pass and returned it 72 yards for a touchdown to make the score 8-7.
After that, it was all Assumption.
Wiggins scored on a 17-yard run to increase the Mustangs’ lead to 16-7.
The Mustangs put the game away with a 26-point second quarter. Melvin Young scored on a 2-yard run and was followed by touchdown runs of 30 yards by Jimmie Wise and 6 yards by Domangue for a 36-7 lead.
Assumption dictated the tempo of the game with a dominate running game (37 carries for 290 yards) and finished with 371 yards of total offense. Wise led the Mustangs with nine carries for 92 yards, and Wiggins added seven carries for 81 yards.
The Mustangs’ final score came when Domangue and Wiggins hooked up again on a 49-yard touchdown pass for a 42-7 halftime lead.
Domangue completed 4-of-8 passes for 81 yards, and Wiggins had two catches for 67 yards and two scores.
Assumption added one score in the third quarter on Joshua Fields’ 3-yard run for a 49-7 lead.
Morgan City’s offense found the end zone in the final minute of the game when Hector Tolento tossed an 8-yard touchdown pass to Humphrey to make the score 49-14.
Morgan City finished with 169 yards of total offense (68 yards rushing, 101 yards passing). Tolento completed 10-of-16 passes for 101 yards, and Humphrey had eight receptions for 87 yards and one score.
“Our kids fought hard all season long, and we played a very good game last week,” Morgan City coach Dennis Lorio said. “(Friday), we ran into a very talented Assumption team, but our kids still gave us all they had. We just didn’t have enough bullets, but our guys did everything we could have asked from them.”
