Two area track and field standouts were named to the Louisiana Sports Writers Association All-State Track and Field team recently released.
Morgan City High School’s Jaylen Jones made the list in the boys’ 200-meter dash, while Central Catholic’s Meo Knight was honored in the girls’ high jump.
The boys’ and girls’ teams were composite lists of all classes.
Jones made the list with the fifth-best time in the 200-meter dash at 21.78.
He recorded a 21.78 at the Louisiana High School Athletic Association Class 4A State Track and Field Meet en route to a Class 4A state runner-up finish.
Chris Lewis of Lakeside had the fastest 200-meter run on the list at 21.31.
Jones also competed in state in the triple jump and the Tigers’ 4x100-meter relay and 4x200-meter relay at state. The Tigers’ 4x100 team finished as state runner-up.
Morgan City track and field coach Gary Johnson was unavailable for comment this morning.
As for Knight, she leaped 5-feet, 4 inches at both the Class 1A regional and state meets en route to a runner-up finish in the event for the second consecutive year.
Her height in the event is tied with seven others.
The top mark in the event belonged to two competitors, Hannah Lutrick of Ouachita Christian and Jasmine White of Logansport. Both had leaped 5- feet, 6 inches this season. Lutrick won the state title in Class 1A, while White was the state champion a year ago.
Central Catholic track and field coach David Fuhrer said while Knight didn’t have to come out for track after she already had accomplished most of her goals in high school, including a basketball scholarship, he said that she did any way because she was a “competitor” and wanted to win a title in the event.
Knight only competed in three meets this season — district, regional and state.
He said he was “”very proud of her for this accomplishment.”
