Chenevert breaks school scoring record in MCHS win
The 2013-14 season began just like last season ended for Morgan City’s Casey Chenevert: With a record-breaking performance.
After eclipsing the school scoring mark with more than 40 points in the season finale against Assumption last year, the Lady Tiger junior start the season with a 44-point performance in Morgan City’s 62-57 overtime win against West St. Mary Wednesday.
Among Chenevert’s points were seven three-pointers and a 9-of-10 performance from the free-throw line.
Morgan City began the game with a 14-10 lead after a period of play and led 25-22 at the half.
West St. Mary rallied for a 41-38 lead after three quarters, while Morgan City tied the game at the end of regulation following a 13-10 scoring advantage in the fourth.
In overtime, Morgan City outscored West St. Mary 11-6.
Other top contributors for Morgan City included Meya Morse, 10 points; and Kaylyn Washington, five points.
The Berwick Lady Panthers picked up their first win of the season with a 43-29 victory against Grand Isle on the road Tuesday.
Berwick jumped on top early with an 11-4 first-quarter advantage, while both teams put up eight points in the second quarter as the Lady Panthers led 19-12 at the half.
The Lady Panthers outscored Grand Isle 13-8 in the third period and 11-9 in the final period for the win.
Aija Robinson led the Lady Panthers with 20 points, while Brittany Boudreaux added 15 points and Kaloni James, three points, to lead the Lady Panthers.
Berwick High School knocked off Grand Isle 44-35 in their season opener Tuesday on the road.
The Panthers outscored Grand Isle in every quarter except the fourth, taking a 14-10 lead after a period of play and a 25-17 lead at half.
Berwick extended its lead to 34-23 after three quarters.
Audwin Williams led the Panthers with 15 points, while Brandon Naverro, Tim Shelby and Cody Roberie added seven points each and Tré Matthews and Tyvon Batiste each scored four points.
