Hacksaw Jim Duggan to join GCW this weekend

Professional wrestling fans, this weekend should be one to remember.
Hacksaw Jim Duggan, one of wrestling’s legends, will take part in the Gulf Coast Wrestling show, 7 p.m. Saturday at Morgan City Junior High.
Hacksaw fought the likes of Hulk Hogan, Andre the Giant and many more in his 27-year career dating back to 1979.
He was recently inducted into the World Wrestling Entertainment Hall of Fame in Atlanta
Saturday’s event falls on the 25th anniversary of the Royal Rumble. Hacksaw won the first Royal Rumble held in 1988.
The Royal Rumble consists of 30 entrants trying to throw each other over the top rope of the ring. Wrestlers are eliminated as they hit the arena floor until one winner is remaining.
Hacksaw was a New York state wrestling champion in high school and was a standout football player. He went on to play for Southern Methodist University and the Atlanta Falcons in the NFL.
Early in his career, Hacksaw lived in Alexandria when he was with Mid South Wrestling.
He moved up the ranks to the World Wrestling Federation in 1987 and made a name for himself. He was well known for entering the ring with a two-by-four and an American flag.
“Some people are confused by the nickname Hacksaw when I carry a two-by-four,” Duggan said. “It goes back to my football days. My team called me Hacksaw for the way I broke through tackles.”
In 1994, Hacksaw moved to rival World Championship Wrestling. He was sidelined with kidney cancer in 1998, which he beat.
Hacksaw has bounced between nationwide promotions and smaller shows since then and said he enjoys interacting with fans in the smaller venues.
Even at 58, Hacksaw said he wrestles six or eight times a month in smaller shows like GCW.
On Saturday, he will join GCW fan favorites Psycho Mike and Mustang Mike in a three-on-three tag team bout.
Proceeds from concessions will go to Morgan City Junior High’s track program.
Tickets start at $10. For more information call 518-0433.
