The news from Washington, D.C. gets worse by the day.
Every American citizen is now on the hook for $6,200 each just for ill-advised advances to the nation’s banks. Even more ridiculous deals are being hammered out in the name of saving Detroit jobs which will, in fact, kill the auto industry unless Uncle Sam backs off (remember, the government forced Detroit to build cars no one wanted to buy and the unions forced them to build them in this country – producing the $20,000 roller skate and the economic problems the government is now trying to solve).
But all that is nothing compared to the 2010 federal budget. Congressman Charlie Melancon voted for this deficit-spewing debacle. Luckily all is not lost … yet. It should be remembered that the budget is just a non-binding resolution that means nothing. The real battles will come this summer as Congress works on various appropriation bills that will certainly bankrupt this nation.
That’s why you need to call Melancon now and tell him you do not support more federal government intrusion in education; you do not support rationed health care which is what we’ll get under the proposed health care reforms and you certainly do not support cap and trade (cap and trade is a carbon emission scheme whereby the government determines the cap and emitters pay to trade credits for emissions and the government sits back and pockets $2 trillion for essentially running a crooked carnival game), carbon sequestration or any other of the schemes that will double the price of gasoline and double or triple your utility bill. These hare-brained schemes will sink the economy and put you, your children and your grandchildren in hock for trillions and trillions of dollars we do not have to spare.
Item: The federal Department of Education was created in 1980. Education quality and achievement in government-run schools declined after the federal agency was created.
Item: The uninsured is not 16 percent of the population as the government claims. If that were true hospital statistics would show a 16 percent non-payer ratio – and they do not. The problem with high health care costs today is due to the fact that the government does not pay its fair share for the segment of society the government insures now. And they cannot afford to pay the freight for everybody which means health care will be rationed under the government’s plan – just like it is in other nations that control health care.
Item: Cap and trade has failed where it has been tried and proved to be many times more expensive than anyone imagined. It is a failure in Europe. California’s air quality regulators paid for a fraudulent study that said it would have no impact and now that its being applied it is prohibitively expensive. Businesses are fleeing California in droves.
Couple that with the fact that the reason behind this foolhardy scheme is to reduce CO2 emission to “combat global warming” – a position that remains unproven and unproveable. In fact, today’s atmospheric concentration of around 380 parts per million of CO2 is well below recorded historical levels of 6,000 ppm. That 6,000 ppm level, by the way, occurred when life exploded on this planet so history says it is not harmful.
Make no mistake, all these “problems” that must be solved “quickly” are just routine political scare tactics to convince you to give up more of your freedom so some idiot or group of idiots in Washington can increase their power and control.
The more pervasive and invasive they become, the more campaign contributions flow their way for protection. The more money they can scare out of people, the longer they retain their power. This nonsensical game has to stop, and its time you and I quit participating.
Write or call Congressman Charlie Melancon and tell him you do not favor this unaffordable overreach into the privacy of our lives and our livelihood. Tell him to vote no for more federal intrusion into education; tell him to vote no for federalizing health care and, especially, tell him that cap and trade (cap and tax) will destroy Louisiana’s primary economic engine and its citizens.

Don’t be surprised if one of the office flacks tries to move you off your position. Remember this is early in the election cycle when lies and unpopular positions are easily forgotten so you might be told anything under the sun but don’t believe it. The policies up for consideration at the federal level are bad for everybody – poor, rich, average, black, white Hispanic … everybody will suffer if any of this nonsense becomes law. Call or write now.
