Jimmie Johnson’s 20th annual Free Basketball Clinic was held Saturday at Morgan City High School. Children ages 9 to 16 gathered to learn team work as well as basketball skills from Johnson and his assistants Joe Jones, John Matthews, Lawrence Carbin and Nathan Williams.

St. Mary Parish junior high and high schools get a head start on the 2016-17 school year by hosting orientations this week for parents and students. Orientations begin today and continue through Aug. 4. Each school has a different schedule.
Representatives of local governments got no good news on sales taxes Monday at the St. Mary Parish Council of Governments quarterly meeting in Franklin.

A hit debut for Porchfest: Conceived in sadness, festival celebrates local culture

Cloudy skies did not prevent PorchFest musicians from giving a heartfelt performance on Saturday in support of a good cause for the community.

Bear Festival, Wooden Boat Show weekend brings visitors to Franklin

The Bayou Teche Black Bear Festival and the Bayou Teche Wooden Boat Show brought vendors, music, fun activities and classic wooden watercraft to Franklin last weekend. Bear Festival attendees were treated to a fireworks show Saturday evening, at top. At center, Lewis Graham, of Lafayette, was among the participants at the wooden boat show with the mahogany runabout he built himself.
