Morgan City cruised past Franklin, 77-51, in first-day action at Centerville’s Tournament of the Teche Thursday.

St. Mary Outreach and United Way ask neighbors in the Tri-City area to open their hearts and pantries to feed families in need. The Food for Families food drive will be from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Whitney Bank on Brashear Avenue.

Timothy R. Duval, 38, of Patterson, was charged Thursday with attempted second-degree murder in the stabbing of Patterson Police Cpl. Kevin Stewart. Duval allegedly stabbed Stewart while Stewart was trying to arrest Duval for shoplifting. Stewart was treated at Teche Regional Medical Center and returned to work Thursday night. Duval was also charged with disarming of an officer, aggravated battery on an officer, resisting an officer by force, resisting an officer by flight, battery on an officer and theft by shoplifting.

A 38-year-old man has been charged with attempted murder of a Patterson police officer, after he allegedly stabbed the officer in the face with a steak knife Thursday evening. The officer was treated for his injuries and returned to work that night.

Legislators, 1A visit La. 318 site

Rep. Sam Jones, DOTD Sec. Shawn Wilson, I-49 South Coalition Chairman David Mann, Gov. John Bel Edwards, 1A’s Jason El Koubi and Sen. Bret Allain examined the plans for the La. 318 interchange, above, and visited the site. A public meeting will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. at the West St. Mary Civic Center regarding the US 90 and La. 318 interchange project.

St. Mary Parish schools are off to a positive first day of school despite one minor hiccup with one of the buses.

Two parish teams in tourney

Team Louisiana, at top, strung together a 1-1 record in action in the 2016 Dixie Youth World Series in Laurel, Mississippi. They will take North Carolina tonight at 5:45 p.m. in the Dixie Youth World Series in Laurel, Miss. At bottom, the Patterson 10U Softball All-Stars, above with Patterson City leaders last week, finished 2-0 in pool play at the Babe Ruth World Series in Jensen Beach, Florida. Patterson will return to action today when it faces the winner of Pit County, North Carolina, and the New Jersey Lasers.
