Berwick High School won its home opener Tuesday with a 3-1 (25-17, 18-25, 25-19, 25-20) victory against Central Lafourche. Ashton Morales and Mary Jordan Melancon led Berwick. Morales had two aces, nine kills, two blocks, four assists and 12 digs, while Melancon had two aces, two kills, two blocks, seven assists and seven digs.

Vandebilt Catholic eased past the Central Catholic Lady Eagles in three games Monday in both teams’ season opener in Morgan City. Vandebilt Catholic won 25-8, 25-12, 25-12.
Several cadets from the Franklin Senior High School Junior ROTC program recently went to Franklin Junior High School to give a lesson on flying the United States flag. Under the guidance of Sgt. Joseph Nowakowski, the students learned the origin and history behind the flag.

New technology gives data on Atchafalaya, weather

As of Monday, mariners now have access to more real-time weather and waterway information in the Atchafalaya River to assist them in their navigation efforts and decision making.

Historic hotel burns, 17 lose their homes

The former Peck’s Hotel at 905 Main St. was fully involved when the photo above was captured at 6:30 p.m., Monday. Below, Assistant Franklin Fire Chief Jeff Hildreth, left, is on scene to inspect the damages. Donations of clothing and household goods for the 17 people left homeless can be dropped off at the fire station on First Street, the Emergency Aid Center on Commercial Street or in collection boxes located at Capital One Bank on Northwest Boulevard.

Seventeen people are homeless this morning after a fire destroyed the historic Peck’s Hotel on Main Street in Franklin Monday night.
