Officials with St. Mary Parish Schools avoided trouble when they decided not to rely on a type of state aid that was subsequently cut. But question marks remain about how much school aid St. Mary can expect from the cash-strapped state government.

Area legislators were the guests at a St. Mary Chamber of Commerce luncheon Wednesday in Franklin. Representative Beryl A. Amedee, (Dist. 51) was elected to the Louisiana House of Representatives in November, 2015 and an “unprecedented” series of legislative sessions awaited.

Nation, parish celebrate Older Americans Month

The ribbon was cut at the new offices of the St. Mary Parish Council on Aging on Monday. St. Mary Parish Chamber of Commerce representatives, local officials and others were on hand for the opening. The agency has moved into their new headquarters at the Blevins Building in downtown Franklin. The ribbon cutting was followed by an open house.

Older adults are a growing and increasingly vital part of this country.

Breaker fire blamed on mechanical failure

Smoke billows Monday morning from the Federal Avenue power substation in Morgan City after a circuit breaker exploded and caught fire. Residents in the area lost power for about an hour. No one was injured, and the damage was contained to the substation, city officials said.

A mechanical failure inside a circuit breaker Monday morning caused it to explode, leaving some Morgan City residents without power for about an hour, City Utilities Director Bill Cefalu said.
