Free vessel check offered

LAFAYETTE, La. — The Coast Guard and Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 44 are providing free vessel safety checks and sponsoring a kickoff event for National Safe Boating Week from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at West Marine, 2668 Johnston St., Lafayette.

Operators can bring their recreational boats to the parking lot for a free vessel safety inspection, stated a news release from the Coast Guard. During vessel safety checks, examiners will suggest ways to bring a vessel into compliance. This is a no-fault exam and deficiencies found during the safety check will not be reported. The goal is to provide safe boating advice and informative literature.

In addition to the free exam during the National Safe Boating Week, operators can obtain a free, no-fault vessel safety check conducted by the auxiliary before heading out on the water. The safety checks are courtesy examinations of the vessel, verifying the presence and condition of certain safety equipment required by state and federal regulations.

The Coast Guard is focused on prevention. In Louisiana, the 2012 recreational boating statistics show 116 boating accidents resulting in a total of 12 fatalities.
