Flood protection plans in Baldwin in review phase

Environmental reviews of proposed flood control measures below Baldwin are in the works.

Mayor Wayne Breaux told the board of aldermen Tuesday that those reviews will be submitted to various state agencies for approval before construction can begin on a series of levees and other measures in the Bayou Choupique area.

“Then we can get on with the planning phases,” Breaux said. “I’ve had some discussions with the St. Mary Parish Levee District, and they are going to put some monies in their budget to assist us with this project.”

Baldwin received a $1 million grant through the state Municipal Infrastructure Program. The project will cost about $200,000 more than that, and the town is asking the levee district to make up the difference.

Breaux also reported that two homes have been rehabilitated and a third is about to be addressed in the town’s housing rehab project as funded by a federal funding program.

The mayor also reported that plans to build a new fire station facility. It will be located at the former Baldwin Elementary School, which was recently acquired by the town. Bids came in over budget, Breaux said, so the project is being revamped to bring it back in range of the $1 million state capital outlay grant the town was awarded.

There will be discussion at the board’s next meeting regarding bucket tosses in the town. Alderman Clarence Vappie is floating a proposal to limit those fundraisers to La. 83, and only on the boulevard section at the intersection with La. 182. Recent complaints about unsafe conditions when bucket tosses are held at Chitimacha Trail and La. 182 have prompted the discussion.

The board also appointed Debbie Boudreaux as the town’s new treasurer after the retirement of former treasurer Lorraine Thibodaux.

Breaux also appointed Alderwoman Thor Frederick as chairman of the public property and personnel committee, and Alderman Tony Gibson chairman of the utility committee.
