Fire destroys home in Bayou Vista
BAYOU VISTA, La. — A fire Tuesday in Bayou Vista destroyed a mobile home, but no one was injured in the fire, St. Mary Parish Fire District 7 Supervisor Joshua Ashley said.
The Bayou Vista Volunteer Fire Department responded to a report of a mobile home on fire in the 900 block of La. 182 at 11:19 a.m. Tuesday, Ashley said.
An eyewitness said she was in a building behind the mobile home and heard a popping noise and thought the building she was in was on fire. Then she went outside and saw the mobile home in front of her was on fire, she said.
Eyewitnesses said they saw smoke and smelled burning metal.
Ashley said the fire originated in the kitchen, but firefighters are still investigating the cause of the fire. The home sustained substantial damage, though there are some salvageable items on one side of the trailer, he said.
“There was damage all the way through the trailer,” Ashley said. “The trailer’s going to be totaled.”
No one was in the home at the time of the fire, and no one was injured, Ashley said.
Some of the siding on the trailer next door started to melt so firefighters started cooling that trailer before they attacked the trailer that was on fire, Ashley said.
No other damage was sustained to surrounding buildings in the fire, Ashley said.
The Berwick Volunteer Fire Department also responded to the fire for mutual aid, he said. The St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office responded to help at the scene as well, he said.
The Bayou Vista Volunteer Fire Department fought the fire with four trucks while Berwick brought two trucks, Ashley said.
Firefighters finished fighting the fire and returned to the station by 2:30 p.m., he said.
