Fire destroys abandoned home in Siracusaville

MORGAN CITY, La. Morgan City firefighters responded to fire in Siracusaville Monday afternoon after an abandoned house caught fire.

The Morgan City Fire Department received a call about a fire in the 1400 block of James Street in Siracusaville at 1:47 p.m. and arrived on scene at 1:52 p.m., said Fire Chief Morris Price.

The house was “pretty much totaled” when firefighters arrived at the scene, he said. Price talked with the homeowner, who had not seen the house in more than 10 years, he said. No one was injured in the fire, Price said.

The home has been abandoned for about six or seven years and has not had electricity for about seven years, Price said. The cause of the fire is most likely arson whether it was accidental or on purpose, he said, but the cause of the fire is still under investigation. The fire department is working with the St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office on the investigation, Price said.

Price is trying to work with the parish to have the abandoned house demolished, he said.

The Morgan City Fire Department responded with three pumper trucks, a ladder truck, six off-duty firefighters and two volunteer firefighters along with Acadian Ambulance, and the sheriff’s office.
