MORGAN CITY — The Morgan City Tigers suffered a tough District 8-4A loss at home Tuesday in a 55-53 defeat to Ellender Memorial.

While the Tigers outscored Ellender 14-13 after a period of play, Ellender edged the Tigers in the scoring column in the second quarter, 17-14, for a 30-28 lead at the half.

Morgan City came out of halftime with a 17-10 run in the third quarter for a 45-40 lead.

However, Ellender outscored Morgan City 15-8 in the fourth quarter for the narrow victory.

Tyrin Watts led Morgan City with 24 points.

Other top Morgan City scorers included Brannon Randle and Buddy Humphrey, eight points apiece; Jaylen Jones, seven; and Eric Walker, four.

The Tigers (14-9 overall, 2-3 in district play) will continue District 8-4A action Thursday when they travel to Bourg to take on South Terrebonne. Junior varsity boys’ action is set for 5 p.m., while varsity boys’ play is set to follow the girls’ varsity contest at approximately 7 p.m.

Vandebilt Catholic downs Central Catholic

Vandebilt Catholic defeated Central Catholic, 54-44, in non-district action Tuesday in Morgan City.

Vandebilt Catholic entered the game as the top vote-getter outside Class 4A’s top 10, while Central Catholic was the No. 1 team in Class 1A.

Tuesday’s loss snapped an 11-game winning streak for the Eagles (15-4 overall, 4-0 in District 8-1A) whose last loss came to Comeaux on Dec. 26 in the opening game for both teams in St. Thomas More’s Sunkist Shootout.

In Tuesday’s contest, Vandebilt raced out to a 16-4 lead after a period of play, but Central Catholic responded with a 14-9 scoring advantage in the second quarter and trailed 25-18 at the half.

Central Catholic outscored Vandebilt Catholic 14-10 in the third quarter and trailed 35-32 after three quarters.

However, Vandebilt outscored Central Catholic 19-12 in the fourth quarter for the final.

Josh Singleton led Central Catholic with 18 points, while Dontrell Brown added 14.

In junior varsity action, Central Catholic fell to Vandebilt 51-42.

Samarick Paul led Central Catholic with 11 points, while Jalen Johnson added 10.

Central Catholic will return to action Friday when it hosts Class 1A’s seventh-ranked Ascension Episcopal in District 8-1A play. Varsity action is set for a 7 p.m. start.

Patterson routs Kaplan

The Patterson Lumberjacks continued to cruise through District 9-3A play as they routed Kaplan in Patterson Tuesday, 81-53.

Patterson scored an impressive 31 points in the first quarter as it jumped out to a 31-16 advantage after a period of play.

The ’Jacks continued their dominance in the second quarter with a 21-8 scoring advantage for a 52-24 halftime lead.

Patterson held a 13-12 scoring advantage in the third quarter, while Kaplan outscored Patterson, 17-16 in the fourth quarter.

The ’Jacks placed four players in double figures, led by Deondre Skinner’s 17 points. Daylon Charlot added 11 and Dontrell Benjamin and Nehemiah Augustus scored 10 points apiece.

Other top Lumberjack scorers included Denzel Johnson, eight; Larry Turner, seven; Taylan Grogan and Mykel Jones, five each; and Jedrick Gunner and Malik Garrett, four apiece.

Patterson (12-5 overall, 9-0 in District 9-3A action) will return to action Friday when it travels to Abbeville for another District 9-3A contest. Varsity action is set for 7 p.m.

With a win, Patterson can clinch a share of the District 9-3A crown.

Berwick falls to

North Vermilion

Berwick started out strong but couldn’t hold off North Vermilion in a 63-48 loss in District 9-3A play in Berwick Tuesday.

While Berwick led 10-9 after a period of play against the Patriots, ranked 10th in Class 3A in the latest Louisiana Sports Writers Association poll, North Vermilion outscored Berwick 17-9 in the second quarter for a 26-19 lead at the half.

The Patriots extended their lead to 45-34 after outscoring Berwick 19-15 in the third quarter, while in the fourth, the Patriots held an 18-14 scoring advantage.

Palmer Cox and Devin Tabor reached double figures for Berwick with 14 and 11 points, respectively, while Chaz Russo added nine; Nicholas Osburn, seven; and Nick Canty, five.

Berwick (6-17 overall, 0-9 in district) will return to action Friday when it hosts Covenant Christian in non-district play. Varsity action is set for 6 p.m.
