EA rolls past Patterson
By CORWIN MURRAY
PATTERSON — East Ascension’s offensive explosion overwhelmed Patterson, 66-32, Friday at Lumberjack Stadium.
LSU commitment Sione Palelei took the game over right away, scoring touchdowns on the Spartans first two possessions. Palelei scored on runs of 17 and 63 yards en route to a 12-carry, 183-yard performance that also included three touchdowns, all in just more than two quarters.
“He had it going, but he came into the game nicked,” East Ascension head coach Paul Bourgeois said. “He has a little knee thing going so we pulled him, but he could have come back if we needed him.”
In the second quarter, East Ascension’s other college prospect, Chad Hill, got going.
The senior receiver only had six catches, but they went for 196 yards and four touchdowns.
“They have a heck of an offense, and they will score a lot of points on a lot of teams,” Patterson head coach Tommy Minton said. “This is why we play these types of games; we want to test ourselves against the better teams and players. We won’t see a running back or receiver that good in 3A. We have to learn from tonight and carry it forward.”
Friday’s contest against the Class 5A Spartans was the second the Lumberjacks (0-2) have had against a 5A opponent in as many weeks as Patterson opened the season with a 21-12 loss to Class 5A Brother Martin.
The Lumberjacks trailed 21-0 early in the second quarter before getting the offense going.
Patterson got on the scoreboard when quarterback Spencer Landry hooked up with standout receiver Mykel Jones on a 14-yard score with 8:16 remaining in the first half.
The touchdown came following an East Ascension turnover.
Jones matched Palelei’s and Hill’s heroics, catching nine passes for 192 yards and four touchdowns.
“Mykel had a big game tonight,” Minton said. “They were double-teaming Daylon (Charlot) and trying to cover Mykel with single coverage, and that’s not a good idea.”
Charlot had one catch for 22 yards and a touchdown.
Landry had another good night throwing the ball as he completed 20 of 37 passes for 302 yards with four touchdowns, but he had an interception and three fumbles.
“We have to clean up the turnovers going forward, and the kids know that,” Minton said.
By halftime EA had pushed its lead to 50-20. The Spartans rolled up nearly 600 yards of total offense in the game.
The highlight to the second half for Patterson was an 80-yard strike from Landry to Jones early in the third quarter. But the East Ascension offense continued to fire on both cylinders to close out the game.
East Ascension (2-0) will host St. Charles this week, while Patterson will host Catholic High of New Iberia.
Catholic High (1-1) beat Erath 55-10 Friday.
