Deputies keep busy answering theft complaints at Walmart

St. Mary Parish Sheriff Mark Hebert reports the following arrests in St. Mary Parish over the weekend.

—Jaime Ortíz, 26, of Cypress Street, Amelia, was arrested at 9:08 p.m. Friday for driving while intoxicated, careless operation and operating a vehicle without lawful presence in the United States. The arrest was made after a deputy responding to a complaint of a reckless driver on Lake Palourde Road in Amelia learned from witnesses that a vehicle was swerving and nearly backed into a fence. He remains jailed with bail not yet set.

—Brent M. Rock Jr., 22, of Arlington Road, Bayou Vista, was arrested at 3:23 p.m. Saturday for theft and simple battery at Walmart in Bayou Vista. Store security alleges that Rock was observed taking merchandise and leaving the store. Upon being confronted by store security, Rock is alleged to have pushed the employee and fled on foot. A short time later, Rock returned to the store and turned himself in to store security. He was booked, jailed and later released after posting $1,500 bail.

—Angie Gayle Lafleur, 32, of Honey Lane, Bayou L’Ourse, was arrested at 2:15 a.m. Sunday on La. 182 at Frontage Road in Amelia on a warrant for failure to appear on the charge of simple battery. Lafleur was transported to the parish jail for booking and incarceration and was released after posting a $5,000 bail.

—A male juvenile, 16, was arrested at 4:57 p.m. Sunday at Walmart in Bayou Vista for theft. Store security alleges that the juvenile was observed consuming items from the deli area of the store. The juvenile was released to a guardian pending juvenile court proceedings.

—Alanna Thompson, 32, of Shaw Drive, Morgan City, was arrested at 4:34 p.m. Sunday at Walmart in Bayou Vista for theft. While investigating a separate complaint at the store, a deputy was informed of a shoplifting complaint. Store security alleges that Thompson was observed placing items in her purse. Thompson then attempted to leave the store without paying for the merchandise valued at $90.87. She was released on a summons to appear in court in February.

Two patrons at a lounge at 8700 La. 182 in Morgan City were arrested at 2:18 a.m. today after a fight. Each remains incarcerated with bails of $750.

—Brandon Leigh Bowyer, 32, of Kendreck Lane, Robertsdale, Ala., was arrested for disturbing the peace intoxicated and simple battery.

—Ryan Winter, 21, of Glouchester Row, Lafayette, was arrested for disturbing the peace intoxicated and simple battery.

The Berwick Police Department reported that it made five arrests over the weekend, according to Chief James Richard:

—Arturo Lagunes López, 30, of Grout Street, Patterson, was arrested at 9:03 p.m. Friday on California Street for driving while intoxicated fourth offense, careless operation with a crash and no driver’s license on person. He remains jailed with bail not yet set.

—Felton Charles, 30, of Second Street, Berwick, was arrested at his residence at 7:25 p.m. Friday for aggravated battery domestic and warrants for issuing worthless checks from the sheriff’s office. Charles remains jailed awaiting bail.

—Martin Luther Chatman, 30, of Jones Street, Berwick, was arrested at his residence at 1:57 a.m. Saturday for domestic abuse battery. He was released on payment of $3,500 bail and conditions to stay away from the victim.

—Carlesse Monique Chatman, 29, of Jones Street, Berwick, was arrested at 1:57 a.m. Saturday at her residence for disturbing the peace. She was released on payment of a cash bond of $150.

—Kenneth Allen Whalen, 55, of Third Street, Berwick, was arrested Saturday at the Ganaway’s store for theft by shoplifting. He is alleged to have stolen wine. He remains jailed with a $250 bail.

The Morgan City Police Department reports the following arrests over the weekend, according to Assistant Chief Glenn Blanco:

—Jacob Justillian, 19, of Redwood Street, Labadieville, was arrested at 7:27 p.m. Friday for possession of marijuana. He remains jailed with bail set at $742.

—Ben Justillian, 20, of Duke Street, Morgan City, was arrested at 7:27 p.m. Friday for possession of marijuana. He remains jailed with bail set at $742.

—Roselyn Collins, 20, of Morgan City was arrested at 2:47 a.m. Saturday for simple assault and appearing in public intoxicated. She remains jailed with bail not yet set.

—Richard Hawkins, 37, of Birch Street, Morgan City, was arrested at 10:40 a.m. Sunday for disturbing the peace public intimidation. He remains jailed with bail not yet set.
