The Daily Review won five awards, including two first place awards, in the Louisiana Press Association Better Newspaper Competition and a first place award from the Louisiana-Mississippi Associated Press Media Editors.
The Louisiana association and Associated Press awards for 2013 were presented Saturday in Biloxi, Miss. Newspapers from Louisiana and Mississippi competed in the Associated Press contest.
The Daily Review’s first place awards from the state association were for Best News Coverage and Best Investigative Reporting.
The investigative reporting award from the state association was won by Preston Gill, staff reporter, for his coverage of Morgan City Housing Authority issues, which included bonuses to staff described as excessive. Gill also won the Gibbs Adam Award for the housing authority stories.
A judge commented, “It’s easy to see how much good, hard-nosed reporting and analysis of records went into these stories. This is what watchdog journalism is all about!”
Gill’s reporting on the City of Patterson also won a third place in the state contest.
Gill also won first place in the Associated Press contest for his reporting on City of Patterson issues, which prompted the city to begin publishing its city council minutes after a lapse of at least two years.
Harlan Kirgan, managing editor, said Gill’s winning top awards in the state and Associated Press contests for investigative reporting is significant.
“This is the kind of reporting that fulfils a public service,” Kirgan said. “Preston’s stories are the kind that go beyond routine coverage. The Patterson and Morgan City Housing Authority stories are excellent examples of watchdog journalism.”
The Daily Review staff won a first place award for Best News Coverage. The entries cited were for the reporting on a May 22 storm, which knocked power out in Morgan City, and Memorial Day coverage.
Winning second-place honors in the state contest was Zachary Fitzgerald, staff reporter, for his story on Patterson teen Issac White, who had a role in the movie “The Butler.”
The Daily Review won a third place award in the state contest for Best Front Page.
