State police investigating shooting death of Vermilion Parish sheriff’s deputy

Louisiana State Police detectives were contacted Monday by Vermilion Parish Sheriff Michael Couvillon and requested to investigate the shooting death of a Vermilion Parish sheriff’s deputy, a state police news release stated.
The initial investigation by detectives indicates that shortly before 4 p.m. Monday, 51-year-old Deputy Allen Bares Jr. was near the intersection of South Hospital Drive and Cougar Drive outside of the City of Abbeville, police report. While there, Bares observed two black males, 19-year-old Baylon Taylor and 20-year-old Quintylan Richard, acting suspiciously, police stated.
Police stated Bares identified himself to the suspects and contacted the Vermilion Parish Sheriff’s Office. Bares requested that deputies be dispatched to the location to investigate the situation, state police stated. When responding deputies arrived at the location, they located Deputy Bares who had been shot multiple times. Deputies learned that Bares’ personal vehicle had been taken by the suspects, who fled in the direction of Abbeville, police stated.
The vehicle was located a short time later in south Abbeville. Several agencies from multiple parishes responded to the area and established a perimeter. Taylor was taken into custody without incident in Abbeville. Richard was located in Kaplan and was taken into custody without incident.
After being taken into custody detectives learned that both men burglarized a home on South Hospital Drive shortly before shooting Bares, police stated.
Both men have been charged with first degree murder of a police officer, unauthorized use of a moveable and burglary, police stated.
They were booked into the Vermilion Parish Jail.
Bares was transported to Abbeville General Hospital where he later died as a result of his injuries. At the time of his death Deputy Bares had been in law enforcement for 12 years and 5 months. He is survived by his wife and two children.
