Former Baldwin officer arrested for sex crimes with juvenile
A former Baldwin police officer was arrested Thursday in Patterson for sex crimes against a 14-year-old girl after he fathered a child with the girl, according to a news release from State Police Troop I Spokesman Brooks David.
Joseph Brent, 39, of Baldwin, was arrested for molestation of a juvenile, malfeasance in office, sexual battery and contributing to the delinquency of a juvenile.
In October 2013, at the request of the Baldwin Police Department, state troopers with Louisiana State Police Bureau of Investigations were asked to examine allegations of a Baldwin police officer distributing illegal narcotics, David said. The now former officer was identified as Brent.
During the investigation, detectives were unable to substantiate the narcotics allegation, David said. However, detectives discovered that Brent fathered a child with a 14-year-old girl who was living in the residence with Brent and his wife, David said. The juvenile gave birth to the child in July 2014 at which time DNA evidence was collected and submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis, David said.
On Thursday morning, Louisiana State Police Detectives located Brent at his place of employment in Patterson, David said. Detectives transported Brent to the St. Mary Parish Jail.
