LSU conducts 1st workout of ’14 season

I’m especially excited this season because I feel like we’ve recruited talented players who work extremely hard and care about doing things the right way.

LSU completed the first workout of its 2014 preseason practice period Saturday in Alex Box Stadium, Skip Bertman Field, as the Tigers engaged in a six-inning scrimmage to highlight the afternoon.
The Tigers were scheduled to begin workouts Friday, but wintry weather conditions postponed the start of practice by one day.
Practice resumed Sunday with a 4½-inning scrimmage scheduled to start at 2 p.m. All workouts are free and open to the public.
LSU opens the season at 7 p.m. Feb. 14, when the Tigers host the University of New Orleans.
“I’ve been in coaching for a long time, and there’s nothing quite like the first practice of the season,” said LSU coach Paul Mainieri, entering his eighth season at LSU and his 32nd as a collegiate head coach. “The anticipation and excitement for a new season is as strong for me as it was 32 years ago.
“I’m especially excited this season because I feel like we’ve recruited talented players who work extremely hard and care about doing things the right way,” Mainieri continued in a news release. “We’re not ready to play UNO yet, but today (Saturday) marks the beginning of what we hope will be an outstanding year.”
The 2014 LSU roster includes 19 lettermen from the 2013 club, which won an SEC-record 57 games and advanced to the College World Series. LSU has nine position players with starting experience and eight pitchers that recorded innings last season.
