It definitely doesn’t feel like I should be playing front row in college.

Central Catholic alum Celine Flores wanted to play softball at the University of Louisiana at Monroe.
A flyer advertising volleyball tryouts convinced her otherwise.
And from there, things just took off as she saw action in 33 of the team’s 34 matches, including two starts.
During her initial season, she recorded 11 aces, nine assists, one kill and 128 digs.
Her dig and ace totals ranked fifth on the team.
Flores, who was offered a scholarship after her tryout, said she was surprised she got to play as much as she did.
Flores, who played both back and front row during a solid high school career at Central Catholic, said it was different playing back row in college but also recognized it’s where she should be.
“It definitely doesn’t feel like I should be playing front row in college,” she said.
While she played on successful volleyball teams at Central Catholic that made multiple appearances in the Division 5 state semifinals, Flores said entering college, she had to make adjustments to the speed of the college game.
“That was the hardest part for me, getting used to how quick the games go because (they) definitely have way better people on both sides of the net,” she said.
While ULM struggled this season, finishing with a 6-28 overall mark, including a 2-16 record in Sun Belt Conference play, Flores predicted things would get better because the university has better coaching now and they have brought in better recruits.
While she is done with the fall season, Flores will continue playing volleyball this spring as a member of ULM’s sand volleyball team, something she said is new for her.
“It’ll be fun,” she said.
ULM is entering just its second season in the sport and will begin its season March 8 at the North Florida Tournament in Jacksonville, Fla.
ULM finished 7-6 in 2013.
