MORGAN CITY — Police responded to four separate crashes this morning involving a total of 12 vehicles that resulted in several people being taken to the hospital, according to Lt. James Blair, public information officer for the Morgan City Police Department.
Police were called to the first crash at 6:27 a.m. on the eastbound lanes of the elevated portion of the U.S. 90 bridge that led to two separate crashes involving six vehicles.
When officers arrived at the scene, they located several vehicles involved in three separate crashes. According to witnesses, a vehicle slowed and stopped due to an unknown issue involving two vehicles. As the driver was slowing to a stop, another vehicle struck his vehicle from behind, Blair stated.
The crash set off a series of events which led to two more separate crashes involving six vehicles. Both eastbound lanes of travel were blocked. Traffic was diverted to La. 182 while police investigated the accident, and the roadway was cleared. The occupants of two vehicles were taken to Teche Regional Medical Center with minor injuries.
As a result of the traffic congestion, police investigated three other accidents. At 6:45 a.m., a two-vehicle accident was reported at the intersection of La. 70 and U.S. 90 near Shoney’s Restaurant. One driver was cited and taken to Teche Regional Medical Center for minor injuries, according to police.
At 7:42 a.m., another minor crash was reported, also in the eastbound lanes of U.S. 90 at the Federal Avenue down-ramp involving an 18-wheeler and another vehicle. This accident was also related to the traffic congestion. One driver was cited and no injuries reported, according to police.
At 8:03 a.m., a minor crash was reported at the foot of the La. 182 bridge involving two vehicles. One driver was cited and no injuries were reported. All traffic lanes were reported cleared at 8:08 a.m. and traffic resumed normal flow, Blair stated.
