Charpentier, Williams are honorable mention selections

From Staff Reports

Two members of the Berwick High School baseball team were named honorable mention Class 3A All-State.

Seniors, pitcher Chris Charpentier and outfielder Trey Williams, made the squad, chosen by the Louisiana Sportswriters Association.

“They’re very deserving of the all-state honor,” Berwick coach Mike Thomas said this morning.

Charpentier finished the season with a 7-2 record on the mound with a 2.37 ERA. In 482/3 innings, he surrendered 16 runs (all earned), on 30 hits. He walked 13 and struck out 71.

His senior season on the mound was cut short after an injury in district forced him to make the move to first base. He still was able to bat, though. Despite his adversity, Charpentier finished the season as co-District 9-3A MVP.

At the plate, he batted .341 with five doubles and 25 RBIs. He struck out just six times in 105 appearances. He also swiped 15 bases.

“Chris came back from his injury, and competed well for us,” Thomas said.

Williams finished his senior year with a .304 batting average with seven home runs and 33 RBIs. He also recorded four doubles, three triples and stole eight bases.

“He was our power hitter,” Thomas said. “He hit in the middle of the order for us. (He was a) good defensive player for us.”

Matt Martin of Class 3A champion North DeSoto was named the squad’s Most Valuable Player, while Sean Richard of Iota was named the squad’s Coach of the Year. Martin hit .468 with seven home runs and 43 RBI, while Richard led his squad to the Class 3A title game.
