Cake auction benefits American Heart Association

MORGAN CITY, La.— Community partners are teaming up to host the 11th annual “That Just Takes the Cake” social to benefit the American Heart Association Friday at The Petroleum Club of Morgan City, 500 Roderick St.

The cocktail event, beginning at 6 p.m., will feature photos of guests, a silent auction, steak dinner, live cake auction and ends with music and dancing. The event concludes at midnight.

The gala raised $25,000 in 2012 and is on pace to do so again this year, according to Gwen Luc of Payroll and Business Solutions.

She added that the most expensive cake sold in the gala’s 11-year history went for $2,000.

Money raised through That Just Takes the Cake benefits the community through the continued funding of biomedical research and ongoing educational programs, resulting in lives saved and enhanced health and wellness, Luc said.

“Research is critical to saving lives,” said Luc. “Heart disease is the leading cause of death in Louisiana, and we are making a difference through this initiative.”

American Heart Association-funded research lead to many important discoveries like CPR, life extending drugs and surgical procedures that save thousands of lives each year.

That Just Takes the Cake also funds a Teaching Garden at Bayou Vista Elementary and will fund the establishment of a second Teaching Garden at Hattie Watts Elementary in Patterson. American Heart Association Teaching Gardens are a national, school-based program designed to re-establish what it means to be healthy. Aimed at elementary school students, the Teaching Garden program provides hands-on learning experiences rooted in offering nutritional choices.
