Broussard-Harris Recreation Center names Whitney N. Beverly Baseball Field
The Broussard-Harris Recreation Center held a special ceremony naming the Whitney N. Beverly Baseball Field Wednesday before family, friends, city officials, Broussard-Harris staff members and summer league baseball players, coaches and fans.
Broussard-Harris director Rodney Monette opened the special ceremony in the naming of the Whitney N. Beverly Field in honor of the late Whitney N. Beverly by briefly speaking about the occasion under the newly hanged Whitney N. Beverly Field sign.
Franklin Mayor Raymond Harris spoke of the late Whitney N. Beverly, noting his many years of dedicated service.
“Many of you may not know this, but Mr. Whitney N. Beverly designed both recreation centers,” Harris said. “He designed both buildings after visiting other recreational facilities. It was from his design that the buildings were drawn up.”
Louise Beverly, wife of the late Whitney N. Beverly, thanked the City of Franklin and the Broussard-Harris Recreation Center for remembering her husband.
Marjorie B. Thomas, sister of Whitney N. Beverly, also addressed the crowd by thanking everyone for thinking of her brother.
Franklin Mayor Pro Tem Lester Levine and Franklin City Councilman Eugene Foulcard spoke briefly during the special dedication honoring Whitney N. Beverly.
The dedicatory ceremony continued with Franklin Mayor Raymond Harris, Mayor Pro Tem Lester Levine, Franklin City Councilman Eugene Foulcard and Whitney N. Beverly Jr. all tossing out the ceremonial first pitch marking the opening of the Broussard-Harris Summer Baseball League which is opened to boys and girls ages 9-13 years old.
The league brings baseball back to the Broussard-Harris Baseball Fields which consists of both the Whitney N. Beverly Field which is adjacent to the Edgar Nico Field.
A total of five teams _ all with named sponsors _ will play during the season which will hold games June 20 through July 18.
The five sponsors of this year’s teams are: Capital One; Courtesy Automotive Group; Harris Tax Service; Winn Dixie and First National Bank.
