Work is underway to replace a small bridge across a canal south of the Harold J. “Babe” Landry Landfill on Berwick South Road as well as the reconstruction of Berwick South Road from U.S. 90 south to the bridge. The $1.66 million project is being funded through Coastal Impact Assistance program monies St. Mary Parish has received. Work is being conducted on the roadway, one lane at a time. During the current bridge construction, all motorists, except those who require access to the landfill, are barred from using Berwick South Road. Instead, they must access River Road through the Town of Berwick. After the bridge is constructed, only southbound traffic will be allowed to use Berwick South Road to access River Road. Northbound traffic still will be required to travel through the Town of Berwick. Lemoine Co. of Lafayette is the project’s contractor.
