Breaking news: Morgan City police say man arrested in shooting death of his brother

MORGAN CITY — Police arrested a 34-year-old man and charged him with the shooting death of his 29-year-old brother, who was died after a Friday night shooting at a residence on Federal Avenue, Morgan City Police Chief Travis Crouch said in a news release.

At 11:20 p.m. Friday, Morgan City police responded to a call of a shooting located in the 700 block of Federal Avenue in Officers discovered a man, later identified as Mario Enrique Barahona Ariano, 29, with an apparent gunshot wound, Crouch said. The victim succumbed to his wounds and was pronounced dead by the St. Mary Parish coroner, Crouch said.

Ariano’s brother, Jose Fernando Ariano, 34, of the 700 block of Federal Avenue, was arrested at 7 a.m. Saturday and charged was charged with manslaughter, Crouch said.

During the investigation, detectives established that Fernando Ariano may have information regarding the incident, Crouch said. Ariano was not located at the scene and a bulletin was provided to agencies and news media regarding Ariano’s whereabouts in an attempt to locate him, Crouch said. On Saturday morning, Ariano was located by the Morgan City police, Crouch said.

Crouch said the homicide occurred at one of two apartments at 700 Federal Ave., located at the corner of Federal Avenue and Freret Street. Crouch said the incident is not related to the Louisiana Shrimp and Petroleum Festival, which is being held nearby this weekend. Crouch said activities in Lawrence Park ended at 11 p.m. Friday and the street fair closed at midnight.

Crouch said three interpreters were on scene questioning a witness who had blood on his clothes.

The incident was treated as a homicide until detectives could determine what had taken place and the identity of the alleged gunman, Crouch said.

Officers were able to locate Fernando Ariano in Morgan City, and he was brought to the police department where he was questioned. Detectives were able to determine through interviews of witnesses and evidence recovered from the scene that Fernando Ariano produced a handgun during an argument involving him, the victim, and another person in the residence, Crouch said.

During the argument, the gun discharged, with the bullet striking Mario Ariano in the upper torso, Crouch said.

Fernando Ariano is being held in the Morgan City Jail with bail set at $250,000. The Morgan City Police Department’s detectives division is continuing to investigate the incident, Crouch said.
