Berwick's girls' tennis team wins regional
The Berwick girls’ tennis team won the Division 3, Region 2 girls’ title Tuesday.
The Lady Panthers, the defending Class 3A state champion, totaled 12 points to take the title.
The win meant the entire Lady Panthers’ tennis team will advance to the Division 3 state tournament, which begins Monday at the University of Louisiana at Monroe.
Also, Andre Adams of the boys’ squad also will advance to the state tournament.
In singles’ action, Signe Parsiola fell to top seed Basia Walters of West Feliciana, 7-6, (7-4), 6-1 in the finals.
She advanced to the finals after defeating Valarie Williams of Parkview Baptist, 6-3, 6-1.
Parsiola continued play Tuesday after winning by default on Monday.
Her teammate, Carolyn Sanford, placed third in singles’ competition at the regionals. After she fell to Walters, 5-7, 3-6, she clinched the third spot after beating Williams 6-0, 6-1.
On Monday, Sanford defeated Morgan Friedman of Parkview Baptist, 6-1, 6-0.
In girls’ doubles action, the Lady Panthers’ Mary Margaret Sanford and Claire Parsiola, the region’s top seed, won the finals match in an all-Berwick match also featuring Emma Gray and Allis Armato, the No. 2 seed. Sanford/Parsiola took the finals win, 6-2, 6-4.
Sanford-Parsiola advanced to the finals after defeating Alayna Hebert and Carlee Myers, 6-0, 6-1.
On Monday, Sanford-Parsiola had a first-round bye before defeating Lindsey Palma and Colomb Almanza, 6-0, 6-1.
Gray-Armato advanced to the finals after defeating Chottie Hamilton and Kelly Long, 6-4, 6-2.
On Monday Gray-Armato defeated West Feliciana’s Kaitlyn Douglas and Emma Ford, 6-4, 6-2 as well as Amy Duhon and Hannah Hutchinson, 6-4, 6-1.
In other doubles’ action, Berwick’s Shereen Richard and Abby Ledet defeated Parkview’s Mallory Breaux and Lauren Hart, 6-4, 6-2.
Richard-Ledet also defeated Lexie Taylor and Becca Tatum of Parkview, 2-6, 7-5. The Berwick duo battled back from a 5-2 deficit in the second set to win and secure the fifth position at the state tournament.
On Monday, Richard-Ledet beat Eunice’s Bianca Blanco and Lacy Dupre, 6-4, 6-2, before falling to Hamilton-Long, 6-7 (4-7), 6-3.
In boys singles’ action, Adams had a bye in his first match and then earned a win by default against Abbeville’s My Tran.
On Tuesday, he fell to Parkview Baptist’s Nick Dauzet, 6-0, 6-0.
He then played Doan Nguyen of Abbeville, who defaulted, allowing Adams to take the third slot for state.
On Monday, Berwick’s Jayce Rentrop fell to Doan Nguyen of Abbeville, 0-6, 6-3, 5-7.
In boys’ doubles action, Berwick’s V.C. Caruso and Geisler Ibert fell to Abbeville’s Swapnil Patel and Jonathan George; Berwick’s Riley Credeur and Nate Furlette fell to Eunice’s Patrick Hebert and Taylor Gaspar; and Berwick’s Evan Boudreaux and Chaz Russo fell to Eunice’s Goldy Singh and Bryce Pavich.
