Berwick man arrested for multiple traffic offenses
St. Mary Parish Sheriff Mark Hebert reported the following arrest:
—Edwin Burke Jr., 40, of Pacific Street in Berwick, was arrested at 2:58 p.m. Wednesday on warrants for failure to appear for multiple traffic related offenses including driving while intoxicated, careless operation of a vehicle, and driving under suspension. A deputy on patrol observed a stranded motorist in the Berwick area and stopped to assist. After helping to push the vehicle to a safer location, the deputy conducted a warrants check on the driver. It was discovered that Burke, the driver of the vehicle, was wanted on active warrants. He was taken to the parish jail and held. No bail is set.
Morgan City Police Chief Travis Crouch reported the following arrests:
—Jesus Lezcano, 24, of Morgan City, was arrested at 1:02 a.m. Monday for possession of drug paraphernalia. Officers investigating recent vehicle burglaries in the area made contact with him at a local motel. During questioning, officers located a pipe commonly used to smoke illegal narcotics in Lezcano’s possession, Crouch stated. He was taken to the police department and held.
—Trisha Lynn Riley, 40, of Stephensville, was arrested at 12:37 p.m. Monday for failure to appear for two counts of cruelty to animals, and failure to appear for negligent injury. Riley was located by St. Martin Sheriff’s deputies in Stephensville. She was taken to the Morgan City Police Department and booked on the charges. The warrants stemmed from a complaint earlier in the year in which Riley abandoned two dogs in a Morgan City neighborhood, Crouch stated. It is alleged that one of the dogs bit a resident. Riley failed to attend a court hearing resulting in the warrants for her arrest, Crouch stated.
—Valerie Collins, 47, of Egle Street in Morgan City, was arrested at 3:42 p.m. Friday for aggravated battery domestic violence.
Police received a complaint that a person was walking around the Egle Street area bleeding from the head. Officers arrived and learned that witnesses identified Collins as the person who had struck another person in the head causing injuries, Crouch stated. Collins was located and placed under arrest. She was taken to the Morgan City Jail where she remains on $5,000 bail.
While officers were investigating this complaint, a second subject was arrested after she caused further disturbance.
—Erika Marie Collins, 29, of Egle Street, was arrested for disturbing the peace.
Collins was observed screaming and yelling on the street causing a disturbance, Crouch stated. Officers advised her several times to cease but she refused. She was arrested and transported to the police department.
—Two 13-year-old students were arrested at 10:22 a.m. Tuesday for fighting.
Police were dispatched to Morgan City Junior High School regarding two students fighting. The students were arrested and transported to the Morgan City Police Department where they were booked and released to parents pending court proceedings.
—Victor Cruz-Fernandez was arrested at 2:37 p.m. Tuesday for hit and run driving and no driver’s license after an off-duty Morgan City police officer observed a vehicle strike another vehicle in a parking lot and attempt to leave the scene, Crouch stated. The officer called the complaint in and attempted to follow the suspect vehicle. Officers were able to locate the suspect vehicle and detain the driver, Cruz-Fernandez. He was arrested and taken to the Morgan City Police Department. He was released after posting cash bail.
—Lance Todd Ashmore, 20, was arrested at 3:31 p.m. Tuesday for contempt of court, on a warrant for failure to pay a fine for a seatbelt violation, and on a warrant for failure to pay fine for an open container.
Ashmore was transported to Morgan City Police Department from the Law Enforcement Center in Centerville. He was wanted on outstanding warrants. He remains in jail.
—Edwin James Johnson, 52, of Duke Street in Morgan City, was arrested at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday on a warrant for failure to pay a fine for no insurance.
Officers patrolling the area of Fifth Street in Morgan City observed subjects consuming alcoholic beverage in public. They detained the subjects to speak with them and identified one subject as being a wanted person. The subject, Johnson, was taken to the Morgan City Police Department. He was released after posting cash bail.
—Joseph Maxwell Dignin, 31, of La. 182 in Morgan City, was arrested at 10:41 p.m. Tuesday for domestic abuse battery.
Police received a complaint regarding a disturbance at a residence located on La. 182. Officers arrived and it is alleged that Dignin had committed a battery on a female inside the residence. Dignin was arrested and transported to the Morgan City Jail where he remains in jail.
—Damiano Irwin Celestine, 22, of Eleventh Street in Morgan City, was arrested at 9:37 p.m. Tuesday for failure to appear for vicious dogs.
Officers investigating a separate complaint in the Eleventh Street area encountered Celestine. It was discovered that he was a wanted person. He was taken to city jail and was released after posting cash bail.
—Martaisha L. Brown, 28, of Levee Road in Morgan City, was arrested Wednesday at 7:47 p.m. on a bench warrant for Lafayette Parish.
Brown was a passenger in a vehicle which was stopped during an investigation into a disturbance reported in the Federal Avenue and Levee Road area. A warrants check indicated she was wanted by Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office for failure to appear for arraignment on a charge of possession of marijuana. She was arrested and booked into city jail where she awaits transfer to Lafayette authorities.
Berwick Police Chief James Richard reported no arrests.
