Berwick Council approves Renwick Phase V

By: JEAN L. KAESS

BERWICK — Town leaders here agreed to move forward with the next steps of building Phase V of Renwick Subdivision.

An engineering plat was presented by Reid Miller of Miller Engineers and Associates of Franklin that gave citizens their first glimpse of the new subdivision section.

The council gave preliminary engineering approval and agreed to seek bids for site preparation, leveling and similar work designed to make the area ready for future residents to construct homes.

The new section will consist of 33 lots, supplementing the 170 existing lots. Currently, only two are left for purchase, necessitating the need for expansion.

In other action during Tuesday’s meeting, the council approved Mike Smith’s application to install an 80-by-80 foot viewing pond on property that fronts La. 182 near Tournament Boulevard.

No comment was received during a scheduled public hearing.

Also Tuesday, the board:

—Learned that arrests were down by more than half in January as compared to the same month a year ago. This occurred, Chief James Richard said, because the town had lost officers and was in a training mode. Currently there are six on patrol, a full complement.

—Passed a resolution supporting the St. Mary CAA Head Start Program which is undergoing a “recompetition” process, similar to re-certification.

—Heard from Beverly Domangeaux, director of the St. Mary Council on Aging, who briefly detailed the financial fight her group and others around the state are in while soliciting a promise to support a future resolution of support. The budget battle in Baton Rouge looms large of Councils on Aging across the state.

—Passed a resolution of respect for Jerry LeBlanc.
