Bayou Vista Garden Club celebrates 20 years of service

Bayou Vista Garden Club held its 20-year anniversary celebration Sept. 9 at the Word of Life Family Church meeting room in Patterson. Presidents’ scrapbooks were displayed for viewing.

The club began as an answer to the devastation in the area from Hurricane Andrew in 1992, said President Donna Bucci, who gave the history of the club. Bayou Vista Garden Club was founded by Floriece Tisdale in 1993 and it became a member of the Louisiana Garden Club Federation in 1994. The original focus of the club was on civic development projects, which continues to be our prime goal today.

Special guests at the celebration were St. Mary Parish District 4 Councilman Glen Hidalgo, and his wife, Gwen, and former club members Tisdale and Turner.

Charter members of the organization recognized for 20 years of service were Bucci, Donna Richard, Gloria Roy and Jo Ann Ryan.

Former club presidents on hand to be recognized were Tisdale, 1993-95; Bucci, 1995-97, 2013-15; Marjorie Turner, 1997-99; Ryan, 1999-2001; Janice Verret, 2007-11; and Gloria Roy, 2001-03, 2011-13.

Members Kim Alcina, Bucci, Richard, Ryan, Dawn Thomason and Janice Verret decorated tables using unique themes which included china tableware, stemware and floral centerpieces. Members provided the food for the evening.

Bucci, created the anniversary floral design, “Celebrating 20 Years,” using Bird of Paradise blooms and blades (Stralitzia), variegated ginger, polka dot aspidistra, star begonia, verbena, liriope, caladium, leather leaf and bear grass.

Alcina, environmental awareness chairman, presented the new “upcycling” project which is the process of converting waste materials or useless products into new materials or products of better quality or of better environmental value. For September, Alcina re-purposed old books for shelves, birdhouse roofs, table runners and bookmarks.

The 2013-14 yearbooks and updated club membership brochures were distributed to members.

Bucci provided pots of Louisiana-native iris Laura Louise for members. Door prize winner was Gloria Roy.

Anyone interested in becoming a new member of Bayou Vista Garden Club is invited to the next meeting at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 14 at the Bayou Vista Community Center.
