Attorney General clears DA Haney of allegations

Allegations against District Attorney Phil Haney made by Iberia Parish President Errol “Romo” Romero have been found to be “totally without merit,” according to state Attorney General Buddy Caldwell.

Caldwell said Tuesday the allegations have been thoroughly investigated by his office.

He said Romero had made the allegations in a letter to the AG dated Feb. 29. The investigation was centered on two issues: the propriety of payment of health insurance premiums to District Attorney employees since 1973; and whether the DA’s office violated any statutes by speaking to individuals concerning the candidacies of Iberia Parish president.

Interviews of Romero, Haney and others were conducted as part of the investigation and affidavits and documents were examined.

“We examined the law as it relates to the facts, and totally cleared the District Attorney’s Office of any wrong-doing whatsoever,” the letter states. “In fact, the main unresolved questions are the motivations of those individuals presenting misleading or misrepresenting affidavits about (the) District Attorney Office for the purpose of having that, or the members of that office ever investigated.”

Haney is the DA of the 16th Judicial District that covers St. Mary, Iberia and St. Martin parishes.
