Assumption investigating attempted abduction

The attempted abduction of a Bayou L’Ourse teen was reported to the Assumption Parish Sheriff’s Department Tuesday evening.

A 14-year-old girl was walking home from a convenience store at the intersection of La. 663 and La. 398 around 5 p.m. when a Hispanic man and woman in their 20s pulled up in a white Mustang with a black bug guard and offered her a ride, Sheriff Mike Waguespack said.

She declined and they continued to follow her along La. 663 and offer her a ride. They continued to follow her to Murial Street where the teen lives. She became “spooked” and ran home safely, Waguespack said. Her aunt called authorities at 5:10 p.m.

Waguespack said St. Mary authorities were alerted to be on the lookout for the vehicle and couple, but they were not spotted again. The sheriff said detectives are following up on the investigation and are reviewing surveillance tapes from the convenience store.

Detectives are treating this case as an attempted kidnapping.

Anyone with information concerning this case is asked to call the Communications Center at 985-369-2912 or Detectives at 985-526-1627. They may also contact Bayou Region Crimestoppers by dialing 800-743-7433.

Elsewhere, Zachery Cox, 24, of Leonard Street in Patterson was arrested Tuesday at 5:09 p.m. for possession of synthetic cannabinoids with intent to distribute and possession of drug paraphernalia.

St. Mary Narcotics Task Force agents were patrolling the Amelia area when they conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle for failing to signal. During the investigation, agents received consent to search and located synthetic cannabinoids and drug paraphernalia, Sheriff Mark Hebert said.

Cox was booked into the parish jail where he remained this morning with no bond set.
