Arrest leads to stolen bulldozer

MORGAN CITY, La. -- St. Mary Parish Sheriff Mark Hebert reported the following arrests:

—Clarence Francois III, 46, of Chestnut Drive in Morgan City, was arrested at 1:16 p.m. Friday on a warrant for failure to appear on the charge of domestic battery.

—Stocie Smith, 35, of Utah Street in Berwick, was arrested at 1:16 p.m. Friday on a warrant for illegal possession of stolen things.

St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office Narcotics Division detectives patrolling the Morgan City area observed the driver of a vehicle fail to signal a turn. Detectives conducted a traffic stop and made contact with the driver, identified as Smith, and the passenger, identified as Francois. During the investigation, detectives learned that both Francois and Smith were wanted on active warrants. Both were taken to the parish jail and held. No bail is set for Francois. Smith was released on $10,000 bail.

The warrant for Smith stems from an investigation that began in November 2011 when the sheriff’s office received a complaint of a stolen bulldozer from a rental company located in Morgan City. The piece of equipment was being rented to a client at the time of its disappearance, according to Hebert. The bulldozer was located in Assumption Parish.

—Phillip Aucoin, 42, of Ford Industrial Road in Amelia, was arrested at 12:01 a.m. today on a warrant for theft. A deputy received information regarding the whereabouts of Aucoin. He was located at a residence on Grizzaffi Street in Berwick on the warrant. The warrant stems from an investigation into the theft of about $500 in change that was taken from a residence in the Patterson area. Aucoin was taken to the parish jail and held. No bail is set.

—Hakeemia Bias, 19, of Friendship Alley in Amelia, was arrested at 6:33 p.m. Friday for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, improper lane use, and no driver’s license. Narcotics division detectives were patrolling U.S. 90 in the Bayou Vista area. Detectives conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle for improper lane use and met with the driver, identified as Bias. Detectives received consent to search the vehicle and located a firearm. Bias was taken to the parish jail and held. No bail is set.

—Courtney Junius Gauthier, 27, of Chauvin Drive in Morgan City, was arrested at 9:20 a.m. Saturday for driving under suspension and careless operation of a vehicle. A deputy responded to a vehicle crash on Irish Bend Road. During the investigation, the deputy learned that Gauthier was traveling at a high rate of speed prior to the crash and that he was driving with a suspended license. Gauthier was released on a summons to appear in court on Aug. 23.

—Donovan Wayne Barrilleaux, 24, of Caleb Lane in Franklin, was arrested at 5:54 p.m. Monday for theft of goods. A deputy responded to a complaint of a shoplifter at Walmart in Bayou Vista. Upon arrival, the deputy learned from store security that Barrilleaux was observed putting on clothes from the clothing department and attempting to exit the store without paying for the items. Barrilleaux was released on a summons to appear in court on Aug. 23.

Patterson Police Chief Patrick LaSalle reported the following arrest:

—Charles L. Merritt, 33, of Live Oak Street in Patterson, was arrested at 8:20 p.m. Monday on a St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s warrant for attempted unauthorized entry into an inhabited dwelling. Merritt was released on bail.

St. Martin Parish Sheriff Ronnie Theriot reported the following arrest:

—Jade Aucoin, 20, of Renwick Boulevard in Berwick, was arrested for possession of schedule II narcotics.

Berwick Police Chief James Richard reported no arrests.
